Christmas is ahead of us. It is supposed to be the time of love, family/friends and it’s about spending precious moments with those.
Another thing that comes along with Christmas is the tradition of sharing gifts. Don’t understand me wrong, the exchange of gifts is something beautiful. It shows that someone thought about you and put effort into put a smile on each other’s face.
Yet in today’s society the focus for some of us has shifted into a different direction, such as the following:
1. You feel forced to have a present for someone, therefore you might just end up buying something for the sake of having a gift. This should not be the point.
2. Materialistic gifts. As kids we just painted something, wrote some letters or created something creative. Nowadays many of us just buy jewelry, watches, clothes, expensive products. I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but I do believe that we should put a second thought into how we spend our money. Does the person really need what I am about to get him/her?
We all have good intentions whilst thinking about presents, but let’s really reflect about the consumption.
The most precious thing that we can actually share is time, since that is the only thing we can never get back.
Let’s think about that for a moment.
Let’s spend more time with our loved ones.
Let’s spend less money on materialistic things.
Let’s think about suspenseful gifts.
I believe that there is no need to actually exchange gifts, because sharing time and creating memories is a lot more valuable. Yet if you still want to share something, why not think about a gift, that actually serves a bigger purpose? I want to highlight one idea specifically.
Treedom – a company, which dedicated itself to make our world a little greener. Basically you can contribute your part to have a tree planted. They offer many different kind of trees that are to be planted in many different countries.
This gift is not only a really beautiful thought (imagine, somewhere in this world there is a tree because someone thought of you) but also it creates something much more meaningful. Those trees not only do a big job on the environmental scale (by binding CO2, creating a habitat for animals, etc.) but also they create a purposeful work for people in those countries who really need it.
What I'm trying to say, instead of buying expensive jewelry, clothes or other stuff that we already have way too much from anyway we could invest in something like this - something that makes this world a tiny bit better.
Thank you!
